On the occasion of ART SG, Almine Rech is also thrilled to present Hu Zi's painting in NEW/NOW, a salon-style exhibition showcasing new artists with the aim of introducing new collectors to emerging talents at affordable price points. 
Hu Zi (b. 1981) graduated with an MFA from the Department of Comprehensive Painting at China Academy of Art in 2007. She also completed a residency at the Cité internationale des arts Paris during an exchange at École des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2006). She works most often in gouache, but also in oil paint, always with translucency. In her long-term practice of portraiture, she collates individual experiences into the construction of a self-image by fabricating the very unique touch of bodily boundaries. The subjects addressed include rock gods, literary giants, great artists, and those who have or had an impact on her. When looking at today’s art-historical prospects, she has found the place where she belongs—returning to easel art, especially on canvas in the traditional genre of portrait. Seeing it as the best perceptual field for reconstructing the flesh, she completes it with the notion that the body is alienated in the age of consumerism.
