Almine Rech is pleased to present a group presentation by artists Sasha Ferré, Ana Montiel, Tia-Thuy Nguyen, and Gwen O’Neil for the 2024 edition of the The Armory Show.
In Sasha Ferré’s studio, everything takes place on the floor. The French artist works on all fours, in an almost erotic relationship where canvas is skin and paint is flesh. The idea is to place hapticality – the ability to touch and be touched – at the heart of the painting process. Ferré’s paintings respond to nature not by seeking to depict it but to let it be felt. The artist lives in the gap between landscapes and abstraction, where she unfolds a world of foliage, waves, flames and corals that we can no longer see but would once more need to touch.
Spanish artist Ana Montiel's works read like spiritual, dreamlike invitations that hit you with a feeling of satisfaction and involuntary entrancement. Any tangible form looks acid-washed; a silhouette or a ray of sun gives way to a sfumato of light and pigments. Montiel's artwork vibrates, resonates, and performs a kind of synaesthesia, marrying noise and matter, pixel and sound. Indeed, before setting to work, the artist communes with her canvas thanks to a moment of musical and physical awakening.
Vietnamese artist Tia-Thuy Nguyen creates artworks focused on her surroundings, and the colorful yet chaotic feelings of women living in the modern world. Often experimenting with new artistic techniques, Nguyen will develop different colors, using thousands of sparkling beads, multicolored yarn, combined with jutes and bamboo fiber to create vibrant, dynamic interactions for the Armory Show.
As a colorist, American artist Gwen O’Neil intuitively and methodically mixes and dabs pigment-loaded brushes on raw canvas in a chorus of elaborate chromatic harmonies. Her compositions comprise wave-like color shifts of repetitive stippled brushwork, crashing, swirling, and buzzing across the surface like static. For this year’s Armory Show, O’Neil will exhibit her pointillistic, pigment-loaded swirls on raw canvas inspired by the coastal seascapes of Long Island.
