Selma Parlour Salon Paintings

Almine Rech Paris is pleased to present Salon Paintings, the first solo exhibition of the artist Selma Parlour, on view from November 10 to December 8, 2023.

Selma Parlour opens painting up to other hypotheses, to that of a haptic serenity where light, finding refuge in the material, unfolds an interweaving of subtle associations that draw the eye into a meditative plunge. Committed to questioning the foundations of her medium, the British artist has developed a singular pictorial vocabulary in which the language of geometric abstraction blossoms in works with a diagrammatic aesthetic.

Obtained by the meticulous addition of thin oil washes on linen canvases, her painted works, at once delicate and translucent, take on the appearance of drawn or printed surfaces that tend towards the subliminal. Caught up in a contradictory movement of sedimentation and expansion, paint becomes a source of light, stratifying and liberating itself to reveal all its depth and radiance.

Selma Parlour's works thus combine the restrained formal qualities of minimalist art with a sensibility expressed through the persistence of color: questions linked to notions of surface and flatness, as well as transparency, illusion and repetition, lie at the heart of the artist's plastic reflection. Using geometry and isolated two-dimensional forms, she creates abstract spaces in which spatial confusion is allowed to flourish. The eye finds itself drawn to the surface of the canvas, which becomes a space to be conquered.

Following in the footsteps of James Turrel and Turi Simeti, both of whom have been exhibited at the Almine Rech gallery since its inception, Selma Parlour continues the rich tradition of artists who probe the limits of perception.

Almine Rech Paris a le plaisir de présenter Salon Paintings la première exposition personnelle de l'artiste Selma Parlour, du 10 novembre au 8 décembre  2023.

Selma Parlour ouvre la peinture à d’autres hypothèses, à celle d’une sérénité haptique où la lumière, trouvant refuge dans la matière, déploie un entrelacement d’associations subtiles qui entraine le regard dans une plongée méditative. S’attachant à questionner les fondements de son médium, l’artiste britannique a su développer un vocabulaire pictural singulier où le langage de l’abstraction géométrique s’épanouit pleinement dans des œuvres à l’esthétique diagrammatique.

Obtenues par l’ajout méticuleux de minces lavis d’huile sur toiles de lin, ses œuvres peintes, tout à la fois délicates et translucides, prennent alors l’aspect de surfaces dessinées ou imprimées qui tendent vers le subliminal. Car prise dans un mouvement contradictoire de sédimentation et d’expansion, la peinture, devenue source de lumière, se stratifie et se libère pour laisser poindre toute sa profondeur et sa radiance.

Les œuvres Selma Parlour allient ainsi les qualités formelles restreintes d’un art minimaliste à une sensibilité exprimée par la rémanence de la couleur : les questions liées aux notions de surface et de planéité, mais aussi de transparence, d’illusion et de répétition, se logent alors au cœur de la réflexion plastique de l’artiste. Par le biais de la géométrie et de formes bidimensionnelles isolées, elle crée alors des espaces abstraits où la confusion spatiale a tout le loisir de s’épanouir.

L’œil se retrouve happé par la surface de la toile devenue espace à conquérir et dans le sillage de James Turrel ou bien de Turi Simeti que la galerie Almine Rech expose depuis sa création, Selma Parlour perpétue ainsi la riche lignée d’artistes qui sondent les limites de la perception.
