John M Armleder It Never Ends

John M Armleder who was born in 1948 and who lives and works in Geneva, is a painter, sculptor, designer of installations, performer, archivist, curator, collector, editor, bookseller, gallery owner and lots more. As such he has been one of the defining figures of the art world during the past fifty years. KANAL-Centre Pompidou invited the artist to take over the premises of the Showroom of the former Citroën garage for a period of seven months. In the six empty floors, Armleder has set up a dialogue with a series of monumental installations, conceived specifically for this space thus offering audiences a constellation of exhibitions, events and meetings so that they have the opportunity to plunge into his universe as well as that of those near and dear to him.

It Never Ends is a multi-dimensional artistic project that is vital and in constant movement. It is certainly the most important challenge that Armleder has been invited to conceive to date and presents a paradox; it is a personal exhibition, but at the same time one that invites the works of more than a hundred artists; a vast art exhibition, many of which are fleeting, and sometimes even invisible. It may give the impression of being like the ideal museum, but it is above all an experimental, interdisciplinary and polyphonic project. It is, in short, a ‘Chinese Portrait’ of the person who conceived it, for whom notions of hospitality, collaboration and friendships have always played a key role.

John M Armleder, né en 1948, vit et travaille à Genève. Il est peintre, sculpteur, concepteur d'installations, performeur, archiviste, conservateur, collectionneur, éditeur, libraire, galeriste et bien d'autres choses encore. À ce titre, il est l'une des figures marquantes du monde de l'art de ces cinquante dernières années. KANAL-Centre Pompidou a invité l'artiste à prendre possession des locaux du Showroom de l'ancien garage Citroën pour une période de sept mois. Dans les six étages vides, Armleder a instauré un dialogue avec une série d'installations monumentales, conçues spécifiquement pour cet espace, offrant ainsi au public une constellation d'expositions, d'événements et de rencontres afin qu'il puisse se plonger dans son univers et celui de ses proches.

It Never Ends est un projet artistique multidimensionnel, vital et en perpétuel mouvement. C'est certainement le défi le plus important qu'Armleder ait été invité à concevoir à ce jour et il présente un paradoxe ; c'est une exposition personnelle, mais en même temps une exposition qui invite les œuvres de plus d'une centaine d'artistes ; une vaste exposition d'art, dont beaucoup sont éphémères, et parfois même invisibles. Elle peut donner l'impression de ressembler au musée idéal, mais c'est avant tout un projet expérimental, interdisciplinaire et polyphonique. C'est en somme un "portrait chinois" de son concepteur, pour qui les notions d'hospitalité, de collaboration et d'amitié ont toujours joué un rôle essentiel.
