Summer show After the Encounter

Almine Rech Brussels is pleased to present 'Summer show: After the Encounter', a group show featuring Cece Philips, Christian Quin Newell, Christopher Hartmann, Chloe Wise, Amanda Wall, and Konrad Żukowski, on view from July 4 to August 1, 2026. 

How often, walking down a crowded city street, or looking out a train window, does one wonder about the countless lives flickering by? In ‘After the Encounter’ Almine Rech Brussels presents a selection of paintings that speak to that impulse, centering private moments, dreams, and imagined worlds. Together, deeply idiosyncratic scenes become shared reflections, each work contributing to a collective sense of humanity.

Featuring Cece Philips, Christian Quin Newell, Christopher Hartmann, Chloe Wise, Amanda Wall, and Konrad Żukowski, the show brings together artists who transform lived experience into expressive form. Intimacy is as a guiding force, with feeling taking precedence over explanation, and sensation over narrative. Vivid images and unguarded emotions surface with quiet intensity, the canvas becoming a space where interior worlds become visible.

In the wistful cityscapes of Cece Philips, windows offer brief glimpses into the multiplicity of existence, imbued with the presence of absence, figures gazing out as if waiting. Recent works have brought the artist to the symphony hall. Between Brush and Baton places the spectator in the orchestra pit, the beating heart of a communal art form. Synesthetic and dynamic, the composition sparkles with the gesticulation of the conductor, the string section swelling into a crescendo.

Meanwhile, Christian Quin Newell’s work brings us to another universe, neither past nor future, dream-like landscapes populated by mystical, psychologically rich characters. Though connected by a shared sensibility, each of Newell’s works remains distinct, like a vision.

Beds– the most intimate of domestic spaces– serve as the evocative setting for several included works. Christopher Hartmann’s rumpled sheets evoke sex but also quotidien closeness, the promise of proximity. For Amanda Wall, the bed is a place of refuge, with multiplying figures, mirrored, repeating images that gesture to an evolving sense of self, a freedom to change when ensconced in one's own world. Konrad Żukowski’s Sleeping features a man folded into dreams, an angular Endymion inaccessible to the waking world, watched over by lover or friend.

In Body Part Chloe Wise proposes a still life centered on consumption, waste, and excess: a portrait of modern life. Somewhere between arrangement and disarray, the assemblage of objects suggests myriad interpretations, endless narratives behind this peculiar and slightly sinister collection of detritus. Another work by Wise, Finders seekers brings the same sensibility to the figurative. Framed in an extreme close up, a female form challenges accepted ideas of beauty, ease, and desire.

Each encounter plays out in two steps: first between the artist and his canvas, then between the canvas and the viewer. This triangulation deepens and extends the experience, allowing an intimacy to first be developed within the unruly confidentiality of the studio, then shared with the viewer, inviting them into the circle of confidence.

‘After the Encounter’ evokes the tenderness and vulnerability of whispered secrets and knowing glances, the slow revelation of the most personal corners of the psyche. Meaning arises through resonance and accumulation, as the paintings form a shared visual field shaped by proximity, emotion, and depth. Searching for the universality hidden within the specific, this exhibition celebrates artists who turn sensation and impression into lasting images. As articulated by Edward Hopper in 1953, painting can serve as a conduit for empathy and understanding, a window into another's interiority: “Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world… The inner life of a human being is a vast and varied realm and does not concern itself alone with stimulating arrangements of color, form, and design.”¹

Combien de fois, en arpentant une rue de ville bondée ou en regardant par la fenêtre d’un train, s’interroge-t-on sur les innombrables vies qui défilent sous nos yeux ? Dans 'After the Encounter', Almine Rech Brussels présente une sélection de peintures qui font écho à cette impulsion, en mettant l’accent sur des moments privés, des rêves et des mondes imaginaires. À mesure que chaque scène individuelle est dévoilée, les œuvres réunies s’assemblent pour former un sentiment collectif d’humanité.

Présentant Cece Philips, Christian Quin Newell, Christopher Hartmann, Chloe Wise, Amanda Wall et Konrad Żukowski, l’exposition met en lumière des artistes qui transforment l’expérience vécue en forme expressive. L’intimité sert de fil conducteur, le sentiment primant sur l’explication. Des images vives et des émotions à fleur de peau émergent avec une intensité tranquille, la toile devenant un espace où les mondes intérieurs se rendent visibles.

Dans les paysages urbains mélancoliques de Cece Philips, les fenêtres offrent de brefs aperçus de la multiplicité de l’existence. Ses œuvres récentes ont conduit l’artiste dans la salle de concert, Between Brush and Baton nous plaçant directement dans la fosse d’orchestre. Synesthésique et dynamique, la composition évolue au rythme des gestes du chef d’orchestre et de la section des cordes qui s’amplifie en un crescendo.

Pendant ce temps, l’œuvre de Christian Quin Newell nous transporte dans un autre univers, ni passé ni futur, des paysages oniriques peuplés de personnages mystiques et psychologiquement riches. Bien que reliées par une sensibilité commune, chaque œuvre reste distincte, telle une vision.

Le lit – l’espace domestique le plus intime – sert de cadre évocateur à plusieurs œuvres présentées. Les draps froissés de Christopher Hartmann évoquent le sexe, mais aussi l’intimité du quotidien, la promesse d’une proximité. Pour Amanda Wall, le lit est un lieu de refuge, peuplé de figures multiples, d’images reflétées et répétées qui font allusion à une perception de soi en constante évolution, à la liberté de se transformer lorsqu’on est replié sur son propre monde. Sleeping, de Konrad Żukowski, met en scène un homme plongé dans ses rêves, inaccessible au monde éveillé, veillé par un amant ou un ami.

Dans Body Part, Chloe Wise propose une nature morte centrée sur la consommation, le gaspillage et l’excès : un portrait de la vie moderne. À mi-chemin entre composition ordonnée et désordre, cette collection d’objets légèrement sinistre suggère des récits infinis. Une autre œuvre de Wise, Finders seekers, apporte la même sensibilité au figuratif. Cadrée en extrême gros plan, une forme féminine remet en question les notions de beauté, d’aisance et de désir.

Chaque rencontre se déroule en deux temps : d’abord entre l’artiste et sa toile, puis entre la toile et le spectateur. Cette triangulation approfondit et prolonge l’expérience, permettant à une intimité de s’exprimer dans l’espace privé de l’atelier, puis d’être partagée avec le spectateur, l’invitant à entrer dans le cercle de confiance.

'After the Encounter' évoque la tendresse et la vulnérabilité des secrets murmurés et des regards complices, la lente révélation des recoins les plus intimes de la psyché. Le sens naît de la résonance et de l’accumulation, d’un champ visuel partagé façonné par la proximité, l’émotion et la profondeur. À la recherche de l’universel caché dans le particulier, ces artistes transforment les sensations et les impressions en images durables. Comme l’a exprimé Edward Hopper en 1953, la peinture peut servir de vecteur d’empathie et de compréhension, de fenêtre sur l’intériorité d’autrui : « Le grand art est l’expression extérieure de la vie intérieure de l’artiste, et cette vie intérieure se traduira par sa vision personnelle du monde… La vie intérieure d’un être humain est un domaine vaste et varié qui ne se limite pas à des arrangements stimulants de couleurs, de formes et de motifs. »¹

Almine Rech Brussel presenteert met genoegen 'Summer show: After the Encounter', een groepstentoonstelling met werken van Cece Philips, Christian Quin Newell, Christopher Hartmann, Chloe Wise, Amanda Wall en Konrad Żukowski, te zien van 4 juli tot 1 augustus 2026.

Hoe vaak, terwijl je door een drukke stadsstraat wandelt of uit een treinraam kijkt, komen er geen vragen bij je op over de talloze levens die aan je voorbijflitsen? In ‘After the Encounter’ presenteert Almine Rech Brussel een selectie schilderijen die deze drang onderzoeken, met speciale aandacht voor intieme momenten, dromen en verbeelde werelden. Terwijl elk afzonderlijk tafereel wordt gedeeld, wekken de werken samen een gemeenschappelijk gevoel van menselijkheid op.

De tentoonstelling met werken van Cece Philips, Christian Quin Newell, Christopher Hartmann, Chloe Wise, Amanda Wall en Konrad Żukowski belicht kunstenaars die geleefde ervaringen omzetten in expressieve vormen. Intimiteit staat centraal; gevoel gaat voor uitleg. Levendige beelden en ongeremde emoties komen naar boven met een stille intensiteit, waarbij het doek een ruimte wordt waarin innerlijke werelden zichtbaar worden.

In de weemoedige stadsgezichten van Cece Philips bieden ramen korte inkijkjes in de verscheidenheid van het bestaan. Voor haar recente werken heeft de kunstenaar de concertzaal opgezocht, waarbij Between Brush and Baton ons rechtstreeks in de orkestbak plaatst. Synesthetisch en dynamisch beweegt de compositie mee met de gebaren van de dirigent, terwijl de strijkers aanzwellen tot een crescendo.

Ondertussen voert het werk van Christian Quin Newell ons naar een ander universum, dat verleden noch toekomst is: droomachtige landschappen bevolkt door mystieke, psychologisch gelaagde personages. Hoewel de werken verbonden zijn door een gedeelde gevoeligheid, behoudt elk werk zijn eigenheid, als een visioen.

Bedden, de meest intieme plekken in huis, vormen het beeldende decor voor verschillende werken van de tentoonstelling. De verfrommelde lakens van Christopher Hartmann doen denken aan seks, maar ook aan alledaagse nabijheid, de belofte van intimiteit. Voor Amanda Wall is het bed een toevluchtsoord, met zich vermenigvuldigende figuren en gespiegelde, herhalende beelden die verwijzen naar een zich ontwikkelend zelfbeeld, de vrijheid om te veranderen wanneer men zich terugtrekt in de eigen wereld. Sleeping van Konrad Żukowski’s toont een man die zich heeft opgevouwen in dromen, onbereikbaar voor de wakkere wereld, bewaakt door een geliefde of vriend.

In Body Part presenteert Chloe Wise een stilleven dat draait om consumptie, verspilling en overdaad: een portret van het moderne leven. Tussen ordening en wanorde in suggereert de licht sinistere verzameling objecten eindeloze verhalen. Een ander werk van Wise, Finders seekers, brengt dezelfde gevoeligheid naar het figuratieve. In een extreme close-up daagt een vrouwelijk lichaam ideeën over schoonheid, comfort en verlangen uit.

Elke ontmoeting ontvouwt zich in twee stappen: eerst tussen de kunstenaar en haar doek, daarna tussen het doek en de toeschouwer. Deze driehoeksrelatie verdiept en verbreedt de ervaring, waardoor een intimiteit kan worden uitgedrukt in de beslotenheid van het atelier om vervolgens te worden gedeeld met de kijker, die wordt uitgenodigd binnen te treden in de vertrouwenscirkel.

‘After the Encounter’ roept de tederheid en kwetsbaarheid van gefluisterde geheimen en veelbetekenende blikken op, de langzame onthulling van de meest persoonlijke hoeken van de geest. Betekenis ontstaat door resonantie en opeenstapeling, een gedeeld visueel veld dat wordt gevormd door nabijheid, emotie en diepte. Op zoek naar het universele dat verborgen ligt in het specifieke transformeren deze kunstenaars waarnemingen en indrukken tot blijvende beelden. Zoals Edward Hopper in 1953 uitlegde, kan schilderkunst dienen als een kanaal voor empathie en begrip, een venster op het innerlijk van een ander: “Grote kunst is de uiterlijke uitdrukking van een innerlijk leven in de kunstenaar, en uit dit innerlijk leven volgt zijn persoonlijke visie op de wereld … Het innerlijk leven van een mens is een uitgestrekt en veelzijdig rijk en houdt zich niet alleen bezig met stimulerende composities van kleur, vorm en ontwerp.”¹
