The end of a countdown brings with it a moment of silence, a brief pause while anticipation transforms into action. In post-war Düsseldorf, Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, students at the Kunstakademie, were looking for a way forward. The two artists formed the group ZERO in 1957, with Günther Uecker joining in 1961. “We are in favor of everything. Pessimism comes to an end… ZERO is born.” declared Otto Piene.
Contrasting the cynicism of other avant-garde movements, ZERO proposed an entirely new artistic vocabulary. Movement, energy, and light were the organizing principles, with works featuring novel materials: from the blisteringly modern (aluminum and plastic) to the most elemental (iron and fire). The group expanded into an international constellation of artists, bridging continents and cultures. During the ZERO period and continuing into their respective careers after the group, Mack, Piene, and Uecker sought to push the boundaries of expression and the optic and kinetic possibilities of art.
This exhibition showcases works by Mack, Piene, and Uecker dating from the 1950s to today. In a time riddled with crises, the enduring optimism and confidence expressed in their art– from group ZERO onward– has never felt so pertinent or necessary.
