Ha Chong-Hyun

Abstraction and figuration are foundational terms in the context of modern and contemporary art, yet their meanings are all too often taken for granted. The work of Korean artist Ha Chong-Hyun invites us to reconsider these categories beyond simple binaries. In much of Western aesthetic thought, abstraction and figuration are positioned as diametric opposites along the axis of representation. Central to this opposition is the notion of “likeness”, that is, the degree to which an image resembles the subject it depicts. From this perspective, abstraction appears detached from reality, while figuration is assumed to mirror it more truthfully. The problem with this distinction is that it presupposes an ontological primacy of mind over matter, embedded in the conception of the image as a “window” onto reality rather than as a material entity.

Ha Chong-Hyun’s practice challenges these assumptions at their very core. His works investigate abstraction as something deeply grounded in materiality, where repeated gestures – dragging, piercing, pressing – give rise to “figures” in their own right. This approach resonates with European Art Informel, but is primarily representative of the Korean Dansaekhwa movement, of which Ha Chong-Hyun is a central figure. Dansaekhwa has long been undervalued, reductively framed as tardive or derivative in relation to Western movements such as Minimalism or Abstract Expressionism. Such readings severely overlook the movement’s distinct material sensibility and the sociopolitical conditions under which it emerged.

Ha Chong-Hyun’s artistic development has been shaped by events with a profound impact on his life: Japanese colonial rule during his childhood, the Korean War (1950-53), decades of military dictatorship (1961-87), and the economic recovery and rapid industrialization that followed. These experiences not only shaped his worldview but also informed his choice of materials, anchoring his abstraction in the social and economic realities of postwar Korea. While drawing inspiration from the Informel movement early on in his career, the 1970s marked a search of many Dansaekhwa artists for a distinctly Korean form of abstraction, consciously rejecting European or Japanese styles. 

Ha’s use of burlap, for instance, originated in the hemp sacks used to store grain supplied by the United States during periods of scarcity. This material was integral to the genesis of his seminal Conjunction series, which began in the early 1970s and continues to this day. The works are predicated on his signature back-pressure method (baeapbeop), in which paint is pushed through the reverse side of loosely woven burlap. The title of the series refers to the connective gesture: an energetic encounter between spirit and performance, painting and sculpture, two- and three-dimensional. As the paint pierces through the canvas, it engenders a sculptural plasticity that varies according to pressure, resistance, and the tools employed.

This gesture of conjunction is crucial to understanding the body of work that Ha Chong-Hyun has been developing for over six decades. His method is not based on grand, heroic acts but on daily, persistent exercises of repetition and dedication, prioritizing materiality over the artist’s ego. Acts of meditation, one could say, but in a strictly phenomenological sense: an attentiveness to the subtle emergence of form, texture, and surface as they appear through sustained gestures. Dansaekhwa, the art-historical label literally meaning “monochromatic painting”, proves misleading in that respect. Ha’s work is not simply a reduction to a single color; its chromatic complexity stems from the procedural nature of the artist’s gesture and from how the pieces interact with their surroundings, including the viewer.

Although Dansaekhwa artists initially pursued abstraction as a reaction against the figurative art favored by the prevailing political regime, they consistently maintained a deep connection to their cultural tradition. This is evident in Ha Chong-Hyun’s earlier color palette, developed from a fascination with Korean ceramics – most notably the white porcelains of the Joseon dynasty – as well as the muted, dark earth pigments of traditional Korean roof tiles. As such, his entire oeuvre can be regarded as a meticulous investigation into the elusive essence of color.

In recent years, Ha Chong-Hyun has introduced more vivid hues into his acclaimed Conjunction series, as seen in the works on view at the gallery. While firmly rooted in the same creative principles, each piece offers a distinct chromatic tonality, rhythm, composition, and sense of volume. The stunning, wide-ranging array of visual variations arises from the intricate interplay between the oil paint and the hemp canvas substrate. Ha Chong-Hyun continues to push the boundaries of abstraction beyond clear-cut conceptual apprehension, inviting the viewer into a direct encounter where mind and matter meet.

L'abstraction et la figuration sont des termes fondamentaux dans le contexte de l'art moderne et contemporain, pourtant leur signification est trop souvent considérée comme acquise. Le travail de l'artiste coréen Ha Chong-Hyun nous invite à reconsidérer ces catégories au-delà d'une simple opposition binaire. Dans une grande partie de la pensée esthétique occidentale, l'abstraction et la figuration sont positionnées comme diamétralement opposées sur l'axe de la représentation. Au cœur de cette opposition se trouve la notion de « ressemblance », c'est-à-dire le degré auquel une image ressemble au sujet qu'elle représente. Dans cette perspective, l'abstraction semble détachée de la réalité, tandis que la figuration est supposée la refléter plus fidèlement. Le problème de cette distinction est qu'elle présuppose une primauté ontologique de l'esprit sur la matière, ancrée dans la conception de l'image comme une « fenêtre » sur la réalité plutôt que comme une entité matérielle.

La pratique de Ha Chong-Hyun remet en question l’essence même de ces présupposés. Ses œuvres explorent l'abstraction comme quelque chose de profondément ancré dans la matérialité, où des gestes répétés – traîner, percer, presser – donnent naissance à des « figures » à part entière. Cette approche fait écho à l'Art Informel européen, mais elle est avant tout représentative du mouvement coréen Dansaekhwa, dont Ha Chong-Hyun est une figure centrale. Le Dansaekhwa a longtemps été sous-estimé, réduit à une forme tardive ou dérivée par rapport aux mouvements occidentaux tels que le minimalisme ou l'expressionnisme abstrait. De telles interprétations négligent gravement la sensibilité matérielle distincte du mouvement et les conditions sociopolitiques dans lesquelles il a émergé.

Le développement artistique de Ha Chong-Hyun a été façonné par des événements qui ont profondément marqué sa vie : le règne du colonisation japonaise durant son enfance, la guerre de Corée (1950-1953), les décennies de dictature militaire (1961-1987) et la reprise économique et l'industrialisation rapide qui ont suivi. Ces expériences ont non seulement façonné sa vision du monde, mais ont également influencé son choix de matériaux, ancrant son abstraction dans les réalités sociales et économiques de la Corée d'après-guerre. Alors qu'il s'inspirait du mouvement informel au début de sa carrière, les années 1970 ont marqué la recherche par de nombreux artistes du Dansaekhwa d'une forme d'abstraction coréenne distincte, rejetant consciemment les styles européens ou japonais.

L'utilisation de la toile de jute par Ha, par exemple, trouve son origine dans les sacs de chanvre utilisés pour stocker les céréales fournies par les États-Unis pendant les périodes de pénurie. Ce geste de conjonction est essentiel pour comprendre l'œuvre que Ha Chong-Hyun développe depuis plus de six décennies. Sa méthode ne repose pas sur des actes grandioses ou héroïques, mais sur des exercices quotidiens et persistants de répétition et de dévouement, privilégiant la matérialité au-delà de l'ego de l'artiste. On pourrait parler d'actes de méditation, mais dans un sens strictement phénoménologique : une attention portée à l'émergence subtile de la forme, de la texture et de la surface telles qu'elles apparaissent à travers des gestes soutenus. Dansaekhwa, le label artistique historique qui signifie littéralement « peinture monochrome », s'avère trompeur à cet égard. Le travail de Ha ne se réduit pas simplement à une seule couleur ; sa complexité chromatique découle de la nature procédurale du geste de l'artiste et de la manière dont les pièces interagissent avec leur environnement, y compris le spectateur.

Bien que les artistes Dansaekhwa aient initialement recherché l'abstraction en réaction à l'art figuratif privilégié par le régime politique en place, ils ont toujours conservé un lien profond avec leur tradition culturelle. Cela est évident dans la palette de couleurs utilisée par Ha Chong-Hyun à ses débuts, inspirée par sa fascination pour la céramique coréenne, notamment la porcelaine blanche de la dynastie Joseon, ainsi que par les pigments terreux sombres et ternes des tuiles traditionnelles coréennes. Ainsi, l'ensemble de son œuvre peut être considéré comme une exploration minutieuse de l'essence insaisissable de la couleur.

Abstractie en figuratie zijn fundamentele begrippen in de context van moderne en hedendaagse kunst, maar hun betekenis wordt al te vaak als vanzelfsprekend beschouwd. Het werk van de Koreaanse kunstenaar Ha Chong-Hyun nodigt ons uit om deze categorieën te heroverwegen en ze los te zien van starre tweedelingen. In het westerse esthetische denken worden abstractie en figuratie meestal gepositioneerd als elkaars tegengestelden langs de as van representatie. Centraal in deze tegenstelling staat het begrip ‘gelijkenis’: de mate waarin een beeld overeenkomt met het onderwerp dat het verbeeldt. Vanuit dit perspectief lijkt abstractie los te staan van de werkelijkheid, terwijl figuratie wordt geacht deze waarheidsgetrouwer te weerspiegelen. Het probleem met dit onderscheid is dat het uitgaat van een ontologische voorrang van de geest op de materie, verankerd in de visie op het beeld als een ‘venster’ op de wereld in plaats van als een materiële entiteit op zich.

De praktijk van Ha Chong-Hyun stelt deze aannames tot in de kern ter discussie. Zijn werken onderzoeken abstractie als iets dat diep in materialiteit is geworteld, waarbij herhaalde handelingen – slepen, doorboren, drukken – leiden tot op zichzelf staande ‘figuren’. Deze benadering vertoont verwantschap met de Europese Art Informel, maar is in de eerste plaats representatief voor de Koreaanse Dansaekhwa-beweging, waarin Ha Chong-Hyun een centrale figuur is. Dansaekhwa werd lange tijd ondergewaardeerd en afgedaan als een stroming die zou zijn achtergebleven bij of afgeleid van westerse bewegingen zoals het minimalisme of het abstract impressionisme. Dergelijke oordelen doen de uitgesproken materiële gevoeligheid van de beweging en de sociaal-politieke omstandigheden waarin zij is ontstaan echter ernstig tekort.

Ha Chong-Hyun’s artistieke ontwikkeling is gevormd door gebeurtenissen die een diepgaande impact op zijn leven hadden: de Japanse koloniale overheersing tijdens zijn jeugd, de Koreaanse Oorlog (1950-1953), decennia van militaire dictatuur (1961-1987) en het economisch herstel en de snelle industrialisatie die daarop volgden. Deze ervaringen vormden niet alleen zijn wereldbeeld, maar beïnvloedden ook zijn materiaalkeuze, waardoor zijn abstractie stevig verankerd werd in de maatschappelijke en economische realiteit van het naoorlogse Korea. Hoewel hij aan het begin van zijn carrière inspiratie uit de Informel-beweging putte, gingen veel Dansaekhwa-kunstenaars in de jaren zeventig op zoek naar een specifiek Koreaanse vorm van abstractie, waarbij zij Europese en Japanse stijlen bewust afwezen. 

Ha’s gebruik van grof geweven hennep bijvoorbeeld vindt zijn oorsprong in de hennepzakken die in periodes van schaarste door de Verenigde Staten werden geleverd om graan in op te slaan. Dit materiaal speelde een cruciale rol in de totstandkoming van zijn baanbrekende Conjunction-serie, die begin jaren zeventig begon en die hij op de dag van vandaag voortzet. De werken zijn gebaseerd op zijn kenmerkende achterdrukmethode (baeapbeop), die inhoudt dat verf door de achterkant van los geweven hennep wordt geduwd. De titel van de serie verwijst naar het verbindende gebaar: een energieke ontmoeting tussen geest en uitvoering, schilderkunst en beeldhouwkunst, tweedimensionaal en driedimensionaal. Terwijl de verf door het doek dringt, ontstaat een sculpturale plasticiteit die varieert naargelang de druk, weerstand en gebruikte gereedschappen.

Dit gebaar van verbinding is cruciaal voor een goed begrip van het oeuvre dat Ha Chong-Hyun al meer dan zes decennia ontwikkelt. Zijn methode berust niet op grote, heroïsche daden, maar op dagelijkse, aanhoudende oefeningen van herhaling en toewijding, waarbij materialiteit zwaarder weegt dan het ego van de kunstenaar. Men zou het meditatieve handelingen kunnen noemen, maar dan in strikt fenomenologische zin: aandacht voor het subtiele verschijnen van vorm, textuur en oppervlak, zoals die ontstaan door gestage handelingen. Dansaekhwa, de kunsthistorische term die letterlijk ‘monochrome schilderkunst’ betekent, blijkt in dit opzicht misleidend. Ha’s werken zijn niet simpelweg te reduceren tot één kleur; hun chromatische complexiteit vloeit voort uit de procedurele aard van de gebaren van de kunstenaar en uit de manier waarop de werken in interactie treden met hun omgeving, inclusief de toeschouwer.

Hoewel Dansaekhwa-kunstenaars aanvankelijk abstractie nastreefden in reactie op de figuratieve kunst die door het heersende politieke regime werd geprefereerd, hielden zij consequent vast aan een diepe verbondenheid met hun culturele traditie. Dit is terug te zien in het vroegere kleurenpalet van Ha Chong-Hyun, ontwikkeld vanuit een fascinatie voor Koreaanse keramiek – met name het witte porselein uit de Joseon-dynastie – en voor de gedempte, donkere aardetinten van traditionele Koreaanse dakpannen. Zo kan zijn gehele oeuvre worden beschouwd als een minutieuze verkenning van de vluchtige essentie van kleur.

De afgelopen jaren heeft Ha Chong-Hyun levendigere kleuren geïntroduceerd in zijn veelgeprezen Conjunction-serie, zoals te zien is in de werken in de galerie worden getoond. Hoewel stevig geworteld in dezelfde creatieve principes, biedt elk werk een eigen chromatische tonaliteit, ritme, compositie en gevoel van volume. Het verbluffende, brede scala aan visuele variaties ontstaat uit de complexe wisselwerking tussen de olieverf en het hennepdoek. Ha Chong-Hyun blijft de grenzen van abstractie verleggen, voorbij eenduidig conceptueel begrip, en nodigt de toeschouwer uit tot een directe ontmoeting waarin geest en materie elkaar treffen.
