The Wall: Cece Philips

Cece Philips’ paintings are an ode to looking and being looked at. Her work is part of a long-standing tradition of depicting interiors, from the domestic scenes of the Dutch Golden Age to Félix Vallotton. Full of windows and doors, her work hides as much as it reveals, hinting at a story but leaving the viewer the pleasure of filling in the details. Using light to suggest mood and narrative, her paintings glow with the sublime loneliness of Hopper, reworked with a Woolfian sensibility. 

Philips has a cerebral approach to painting. Her process often begins through an engagement with her many influences, rooting her work in art history, the work of contemporary artists, film, archival material, literature, and criticism. This assembly of works is the product of several months of exploration without a specific goal, an inventory of the artist’s mind. Philips found a certain freedom in working without a defined framework- with all the possibilities of wandering somewhere you’ve only been before with a specific destination in mind. Working in an increasingly instinctive way, surprises began to emerge. 

Above all, these works explore solitude, whether chosen or imposed. Nourishing Loneliness taps into the intrigue of the everyday. A figure pulls back a curtain, theatrically revealing six small vignettes of life, inviting us to be voyeurs. Featuring windows within windows, the painting is a Russian doll, demanding long contemplation. The artist uses her palette to inform the emotional content of the scene, as well as a juxtaposition of natural and artificial light. In The Balcony we are once again looking out into an anonymous city, wondering what could be happening behind each glimmering window. Are the three figures looking into the windows, or at each other? The artist does not see these paintings as portraits, Philips eschews the purely representational, reaching for composite figures she arranges like characters acting out a scene.

In Quiet Interior the figure faces us. Following her gaze, we ask ourselves if she is alone. Philips often plumbs the psychological depths of who we are when we’re alone, paying particular attention to women in moments of solitude, a paradoxical state described by John Berger: “A woman must constantly watch herself. She is almost constantly accompanied by her own image of herself.”   Modern life further complicates this question- in the digital age, when we could always be potentially perceived by someone- if not by ourselves- through a front-facing camera, are we ever truly alone? 

Moving from the solitude to the communal, After Curtain Call brings us inside a theatre. The work captures the breathless seconds at the end of a show, the curtain has fallen, the house lights flicker on, and the audience stirs back to life, as if awakened from a dream. Philips plays with textural effects, layering liquin so as to hide and reveal certain details, capturing the fallibility of perspective. We are invited to step closer, to look from a new angle. Theatre has become a recent inspiration for the artist. The form, simultaneously intimate and collective, grants a certain level of voyeurism so central to Philips’ artistic imagination. A theatre audience can relish in the act of looking without scruples, a privilege also available when interacting with a painting. Philips’ work beckons the viewer to come closer and peer in, like walking through a city at night, tempted by the glowing apartments and the possibilities of life they each contain.

Almine Rech Bruxelles a le plaisir de présenter The Wall: Cece Philips, la première collaboration de la galerie avec l’artiste, du 23 avril au 7 juin 2025.

Les peintures de Cece Philips sont une ode au regard et au fait d’être regardé. Son œuvre s’inscrit dans une longue tradition de représentations d’intérieurs, des scènes domestiques de l’âge d’or hollandais à celles de Félix Vallotton. Remplies de fenêtres et de portes, ses toiles cachent autant qu’elles ne révèlent, laissant entrevoir une histoire mais en confiant au spectateur le plaisir d’en imaginer les détails. Utilisant la lumière pour suggérer l’ambiance et la narration, ses tableaux brillent de la solitude sublime propre à Hopper, retravaillée avec la sensibilité de Virginia Woolf. Philips adopte une approche cérébrale de la peinture. Son processus commence souvent par une immersion dans ses nombreuses influences, ancrant son travail dans l’histoire de l’art, les œuvres d’artistes contemporains, le cinéma, les archives, la littérature et la critique. Cet ensemble d’œuvres est le fruit de plusieurs mois d’exploration sans but précis, un inventaire de l’esprit de l’artiste. Philips a trouvé une certaine liberté à travailler sans structure définie — face au champ des possibles que crée l’errance en terrain connu, lorsqu’on l’explore sans destination particulière.En travaillant de manière de plus en plus instinctive, des surprises ont commencé à émerger.

Ces œuvres explorent avant tout la solitude, qu’elle soit choisie ou imposée. Nourishing Loneliness capte l’intrigue du quotidien. Une silhouette tire un rideau, révélant de façon théâtrale six petites vignettes de vie, nous invitant à devenir des voyeurs. Dotée de fenêtres dans les fenêtres, la peinture est une poupée russe, qui demande une contemplation prolongée. L’artiste utilise sa palette pour traduire le contenu émotionnel de la scène, ainsi que la juxtaposition entre lumière naturelle et lumière artificielle. Dans The Balcony, nous regardons à nouveau vers une ville anonyme, nous demandant ce qui pourrait bien se passer derrière chaque fenêtre illuminée. Les trois figures regardent-elles les fenêtres, ou se regardent-elles entre elles ? L’artiste ne considère pas ces peintures comme des portraits ; Philips évite la pure représentation, en créant des figures composites qu’elle dispose comme des personnages jouant une scène.

Dans Quiet Interior, la figure nous fait face. En suivant son regard, nous nous demandons si elle est seule. Philips explore souvent les profondeurs psychologiques de ce que nous sommes dans la solitude, accordant une attention particulière aux femmes dans ces moments, état paradoxal que John Berger décrit ainsi : « Une femme doit constamment se surveiller. Elle est presque toujours accompagnée par sa propre image. » La vie moderne complexifie encore cette question — à l’ère numérique, où l’on peut potentiellement toujours être perçu par quelqu’un — sinon par soi-même — à travers une caméra frontale, sommes-nous jamais vraiment seuls ?

Passant de la solitude au collectif, After Curtain Call nous entraîne dans un théâtre. L’œuvre capture les secondes haletantes à la fin d’un spectacle : le rideau est tombé, les lumières s’allument par intermittence, et le public revient peu à peu à la vie, comme tiré d’un rêve. Philips joue avec les effets de texture, superposant le liquin pour dissimuler et révéler certains détails, capturant ainsi la faillibilité du regard. On nous invite à nous approcher, à observer sous un autre angle. Le théâtre est devenu une source d’inspiration récente pour l’artiste. Ce lieu, à la fois intime et collectif, offre un certain degré de voyeurisme qui est au cœur de l’imaginaire artistique de Philips. Un public de théâtre peut savourer l’acte d’observer sans scrupules — un privilège également présent dans l’expérience d’un tableau. Le travail de Philips appelle le spectateur à s’approcher et à observer, comme lorsqu’on marche dans une ville la nuit, tenté par les appartements éclairés et les possibilités de vie qu’ils suggèrent.

De schilderijen van Cece Philips zijn een ode aan kijken en bekeken worden. Met haar werk staat ze in een lange traditie van het uitbeelden van interieurs, van de huiselijke taferelen in de Nederlandse Gouden Eeuw tot Félix Vallotton. Gevuld met ramen en deuren verbergt haar werk net zo veel als het onthult; het zinspeelt op een verhaal, maar laat de toeschouwer ruimte om de details in te vullen. Ze gebruikt licht om sfeer en een narratief te suggereren, haar schilderijen stralen de sublieme eenzaamheid van Hopper uit, herwerkt met een Woolfiaanse gevoeligheid. 

Philips kiest voor een intellectuele benadering van schilderen. Haar proces begint vaak vanuit een wisselwerking met vele invloeden, waardoor haar werk is geworteld in kunstgeschiedenis, werken van hedendaagse kunstenaars, film, archiefmateriaal en kunstkritiek. Deze verzameling schilderijen is het resultaat van een maandenlange verkenning zonder een specifiek doel, een inventarisatie van de geest van de kunstenaar. Philips heeft een zekere vrijheid gevonden in het werken zonder een bepaald kader – met alle mogelijkheden die ontstaan door rond te dwalen op een bepaalde plek waar je eerder alleen met een specifiek doel bent geweest. Door steeds instinctiever te gaan werken, schept ze ruimte voor verrassingen. Bovenal zijn deze werken een verkenning van het alleen zijn, hetzij als vrije keuze of opgelegd. Nourishing Loneliness speelt in op de fascinatie voor het alledaagse. Een figuur trekt een gordijn opzij en onthult daarmee op theatrale wijze zes kleine taferelen uit het leven, die ons uitnodigen tot voyeurisme. Met zijn ramen in ramen is dit schilderij een matroesjka, die langdurige contemplatie vergt. De kunstenaar gebruikt haar palet om de emotionele inhoud van het tafereel te beïnvloeden, maar doet dit ook door natuurlijk licht en kunstlicht naast elkaar uit te beelden. In The Balcony kijken we opnieuw uit op een anonieme stad, terwijl we ons afvragen wat er achter elk verlicht raam gebeurt. Kijken de drie figuren door de ramen, of naar elkaar? 

De kunstenaar beschouwt deze schilderijen niet als portretten: Philips vermijdt het louter uitbeeldende en zoekt naar samengestelde figuren die ze rangschikt als personages die een scène uitspelen. In Quiet Interior is de figuur naar ons toe gericht. Als we haar blik volgen, vragen we ons af of ze alleen is. Philips peilt vaak de psychologische diepten van wie wij zijn als we alleen zijn, met bijzondere aandacht voor vrouwen op momenten van afzondering, een paradoxale staat die John Berger als volgt beschrijft: “Een vrouw moet zichzelf voortdurend in de gaten houden. Ze wordt bijna constant vergezeld door haar eigen beeld van zichzelf.”  Het moderne leven maakt deze kwestie nog complexer, want zijn we ooit echt alleen als we in dit digitale tijdperk altijd door iemand bekeken kunnen worden via een selfiecamera, al is het maar door onszelf? After Curtain Call brengt ons van afzondering naar het gemeenschappelijke, in een theater. 

Het werk vangt de ademloze seconden aan het einde van een voorstelling. Het doek is gevallen, de lichten gaan flikkerend aan en het publiek komt weer tot leven, als ontwakend uit een droom. Philips speelt met texturale effecten door Liquin in lagen aan te brengen om bepaalde details te verbergen en te onthullen, waarmee ze de feilbaarheid van perspectief vastlegt. We worden uitgenodigd om dichterbij te komen, om vanuit een nieuwe hoek te kijken. Theater is een recente inspiratiebron voor de kunstenaar. Deze vorm, die tegelijkertijd intiem en collectief is, biedt een bepaalde mate van het voyeurisme dat zo centraal staat in de Philips’ artistieke verbeelding. Een theaterpubliek kan zonder scrupules genieten van de daad van het kijken, een privilege dat ook beschikbaar is door de interactie met een schilderij. Het werk van Philips nodigt de toeschouwer uit om dichterbij te komen en naar binnen te kijken, zoals tijdens een nachtelijke wandeling, verleid door de verlichte appartementen en mogelijke levens die zich afspelen in elk daarvan.
