José Lerma

José Lerma is a multimedia contemporary artist whose practice focuses primarily on portraiture, exploring the intersections of social, material, and institutional contexts. His work responds not only to the urban environments he inhabits but also to the artworks displayed within local museums and galleries. Lerma has described his approach as similar to that of a landscape painter, using his eye as a sieve to distill and record significant details from the world around him. Deeply engaged with art history, he investigates how artistic representation shapes social and political power. His recent series of portraits is notable for rejecting traditional notions of character psychology and emphasizing a haptic, material presence, achieved through custom-mixed acrylic paint that produces a signature impasto texture.

Lerma has served as an Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 2009, influencing a new generation of artists through his teaching. He has held over twenty solo exhibitions at leading galleries and museums, including Kavi Gupta in Chicago (2020, 2017, 2014), Galerie Xavier Hufkens in Brussels, Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York (2014, 2010, 2006, 2004), the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (2014), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2013). His works are held in prominent collections worldwide, including The Saatchi Collection in London, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, cementing his reputation as a significant figure in contemporary portraiture and multimedia practice.
