Almine Rech congratulates Ali Cherri on his proposal for the High Line Plinth, New York

Almine Rech congratulates French-Lebanese artist Ali Cherri, whose work has been put forward for the High Line Plinth in New York. Situated on the Spur, above 30th Street and 10th Avenue, and modeled on London’s Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, the Plinth has since 2019 been the High Line’s dedicated stage for large-scale contemporary commissions, each unveiled for an eighteen-month run. Cherri now figures among the sixty-two artists invited to imagine the seventh and eighth commissions, destined for 2029 and 2030, with the proposals opened to public comment ahead of High Line Art’s shortlist.

For his proposal, Apples in a White Bowl, Cherri transforms the familiar still-life motif into a monumental sculpture: a large white cement bowl holding disproportionately sized bronze apples in an advanced state of decay, at once a meditation on time and impermanence and a play on New York’s identity as the “Big Apple.”
