Almine Rech congratulates Joël Andrianomearisoa on his proposal for the High Line Plinth, New York

Almine Rech congratulates Malagasy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa, whose proposal has been selected among those presented for the High Line Plinth in New York. Inaugurated in June 2019, the Plinth is the first space on the High Line—and one of the only sites in New York City—dedicated solely to a rotating series of new, monumental, contemporary art commissions,  presented for eighteen months at a time on the Spur, above 30th Street and 10th Avenue, and inspired by the Fourth Plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square.  Andrianomearisoa is among the sixty-two artists whose proposals for the seventh and eighth commissions, to be installed in 2029 and 2030, are now open to public comment, which will be shared with High Line Art’s curatorial team to help inform the selection of finalists.

For his proposal, SENTIMENTAL GARDEN, Andrianomearisoa conceives a monument that proposes emotion as a shared language and a site of collective meaning. Developed through a participatory process inviting people to name their favorite flower, each response is translated into a sculptural form and assembled into a single installation. Crafted in aluminum, the work holds fragility and permanence in balance, forming a collective portrait shaped by sentiment, memory, and exchange.
