Peter Halley appointed Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture

Almine Rech is pleased to announce that Peter Halley has been awarded Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. This prestigious honor acknowledges Peter Halley's ongoing engagement with French theory and philosophy.

Through his influential essays on Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard and the post-structuralist movement, Peter Halley has built a vital bridge between contemporary art practice and critical thought. The recognition places Peter Halley among a distinguished group of artists, writers and cultural figures who have shaped international cultural exchange.

For over twenty-five years, Peter Halley's geometric paintings have been engaged in a play of relationships between what he calls « prisons » and « cells » that reflect the increasing geometricization of social space. Inspired by New York City's gridded urban plan and by his own isolation within it, he imagines the abstract shape as a barred prison cell connected to the outside world through electronic communication.
