A Vietnamese legend has it that a hundred black stones, on the shore of the Lake of the restored sword, once turned into silver birds overnight. Sent down by the Genie of Heaven, their mission was to bring peace to bereaved families. By referencing oral traditions, and blending collective myths and individual fantasies, Thu Van Tran is pursuing her work around memory in Vietnam. With her installation The Sky Genius, she seeks reconsideration more than consolation. At a time when the US spraying of toxic agents during the Vietnam War is still being reviewed by the courts, the artist is resuming work on her Trail Dust series by adding a new layer to the drawings. Visually, her aim is to deconstruct insidious language constructs: the trail of dust was more deadly than some thought. Thu Van Tran’s works talk of active, reactivated memories, and places them before our eyes.
