Can photography still be trusted today? And what role can it play in the age of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Fakes? Starting in spring 2026, the Kunsthalle Bremen will expand its collection exhibition ‘Remix’ by four rooms, displaying a selection of historical and contemporary photography. Around 75 works are presented by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Candida Höfer, Richard Mosse, Sebastian Riemer, Ricarda Roggan, Thomas Ruff, August Sander, Taryn Simon, Thomas Struth and Heinrich Zille.
The exhibition 'Fiction and Truth' (from 25 February 2025) addresses a fundamental theme of photography: the supposedly authentic reproduction of reality. With the selected artworks, the show draws attention to the traditional notion of photography as an objective image, as reliable documentation of reality, or even as evidence in the investigation of crimes. The artistic positions on display also show different ways of looking at this: even though the medium of photography is still often egarded as a ‘window to the world’ and perceived as reality, every image, every artistic photograph, is a construct in which truth and fiction can become blurred. The exhibition also addresses current issues such as the flood of digital images on the internet and the question of the credibility of photography in the age of artificial intelligence.
The photographs are partly new additions to the Kunsthalle Bremen collection, partly permanent loans from the Ültzen Collection, and loans from the Lothar Schirmer Collection. Many of the works of art on display are being shown at the Kunsthalle Bremen for the first time.
