Lily Stockman

Lily Stockman is a Los Angeles and Mojave Desert-based painter whose work is informed by the shapes and constructions of the natural world. Borrowing structure from poetry meter, Buddhist thangka paintings (which she studied in Mongolia) and the gardens and hay fields of her rural childhood as the organizing principles for her compositions, she floods and layers these perimeters with her distinctive palette of luminous, vibrant colour.

Stockman paints flat on sawhorses, using techniques and colour palettes inspired by an eclectic mix of 15th-century frescoes, 18th-century Rajput miniature paintings, and the compositions of 19th-century Shaker 'gift drawings.' Combining these influences with her own intuitive approach, she creates a highly personal language of abstraction and colour. Stockman's work is held in the permanent collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
