Matthieu Ronsse Cheap Imitations

Almine Rech Gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition in Paris, of Belgian artist, Matthieu Ronsse.

What first strikes the viewer about Matthieu Ronsse’s work is his remarkable mastery of the paintbrush and his almost casual method of selecting his materials and his artworks. Indeed, Ronsse’s technique is reminiscent of those Masters of classical painting such as Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Greco, Cranach, Velazquez, Renoir, etc. However, he doesn’t confine himself to classical materials and seeks to surpass any temporal or material limits.

His work is intuitive, spontaneous. The artworks hanging from the wall or placed on the floor of the exhibition spaces, housing one of the artist’s shows, rarely reflect the original subject matter. The layers capture the artist’s different states of mind, as well as spaces: his studio, his garden, the walls of a friend’s house, etc. Each oeuvre can be said to bear testimony to the time and attention to detail devoted to it by the artist, as well as the distress he has subjected them to: revising, cutting up, reworking, mixing, assembling, even tearing… All are practices commonly used in Ronsse’s work. All of his works undergo change or transformation and are rendered obscure until the very last moment, leaning towards iconoclasm. They may even be read as a denial or rejection of perfection.

Matthieu Ronsse was born in 1981 in Courtai (Belgium). He lives and works in Mullem. His work has been the subject of several exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, notably at the SMAK (2003), the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (2006), the Marta Herford Museum (2006), Cultuurcentrum Mechelen (2007), MKM Museum Kuppersmühle (2008), Bonner Kunstverein (2010), MuZee (2010) and the Sint-Baafskathedraal Ghent (2012).

La galerie Almine Rech est ravie de présenter la deuxième exposition personnelle de l'artiste belge Matthieu Ronsse à Paris. 

Ce qui frappe en premier dans le travail de Matthieu Ronsse, c’est la maîtrise remarquable de son pinceau et la façon presque désinvolte avec laquelle il sélectionne ses matériaux et dispose de ses oeuvres. En effet, la technique de Ronsse rappelle le talent des maîtres de la peinture classique : Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Gréco, Cranach, Velázquez, Renoir, etc. Mais, il ne se cantonne pas aux matériaux classiques et ne veut rencontrer aucune limite matérielle ou encore temporelle.

Il s’agit d’un travail intuitif, spontané. Les sujets initiaux sont rarement ceux qui finiront exposé au mur ou sur le sol d’une des expositions de l’artiste. Ces couches reprennent donc différents états de l’artiste ainsi que des lieux : son atelier, son jardin, les murs d’une maison d’amis, etc. Chaque oeuvre peut témoigner du temps et de la minutie que l’artiste a pu lui consacrer tout comme des atteintes qu’il lui a fait subir : réviser, découper, retravailler, mélanger, assembler, voire même déchirer sont pratiques courantes dans son oeuvre. Toutes les pièces de Matthieu Ronsse sont amenées à êtres changées, transformées, obscurcies et ce jusqu’au dernier moment, tendant vers l’iconoclasme, voire le refus de la perfection.

Matthieu RONSSE est né en 1981 à Courtai (Belgique). Il vit et travaille à Mullem. Galerie Almine Rech is blij u de tweede solotentoonstelling van de Belgische kunstenaar Matthieu Ronsse in Parijs te kunnen voorstellen.

Wie naar werk van Matthieu Ronsse kijkt, wordt onmiddellijk getroffen door de vaardigheid van zijn penseel en de ongegeneerdheid van zijn materiaalkeuze en van de manier waarop hij met zijn werken omgaat. Zijn techniek doet inderdaad denken aan de talenten van de meesters van de klassieke schilderkunst – Van Eyck, Rembrandt, El Greco, Cranach, Velázquez, Renoir... – maar hij beperkt zich niet tot klassieke materialen en doorbreekt alle materie- en tijdgebonden grenzen.

Matthieu Ronsse gaat spontaan en intuïtief te werk. Wat op zijn tentoonstellingen aan de muur hangt of op de grond ligt, is bijna nooit datgene waarmee hij begonnen was. De opeenvolgende lagen vertolken gemoedstoestanden van de kunstenaar en toestanden van zijn atelier, zijn tuin, de muren van het huis van vrienden, etc. Elk werk getuigt zowel van de tijd en de zorg die hij eraan besteedt als van de aanslagen die hij erop pleegt: herzien, versnijden, bewerken, mengen, assembleren en zelfs verscheuren zijn schering en inslag. Al zijn werken kunnen tot het laatste ogenblik veranderd, omgevormd en ontluisterd worden. Het heeft iets iconoclastisch. Perfectie lijkt not done.

Matthieu RONSSE, geboren in Kortrijk (België) in 1981, woont en werkt in Mullem. Werk van Ronsse vond zijn weg naar tentoonstellingen in België en het buitenland, met name in het SMAK (2003), het Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (2006), het Marta Herford Museum (2006), het Cultuurcentrum Mechelen (2007), het MKM Museum Kuppersmühle (2008), het Bonner Kunstverein (2010); het MuZee in Oostende (2010) en de Sint-Baafskathedraal in Gent (2012).
