Waves

Kunstraum Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria

Press release

The exhibition at Kunstraum Inssbruck is comprised of colour variants of Israel's latest body of work: Waves. Israel's wave motif is hand of glove-like, inspired in equal parts by the 19th century Japanese woodcut The great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai, and the familiarity of a surf-brand logo. The design first appeared in the animated dream sequence of Israel's feature-length teen surf film SPF-18. Each wave is rendered in a unique colorway that connects back to the film's palette: Malibu sunsets, pastel itneriors, and the Pacific Ocean.

Alongside Israel's Waves are two sculptures, Self-Portrait(Wetsuit), 2017, each an empty black wetsuit, cast in aluminium and formed to the shape of the artist's missing body. Exhibted together with the Waves, the Wetsuits' hollow forms reinforce the sculptural qualitifies of their vibrant counterparts.
