Torey Thornton

Brooklyn-based artist Torey Thornton creates mixed-media paintings, exploring the textural possibilities of spray and acrylic paint, as well as collaged found objects, on surfaces such as paper, wood panels, and other substrates. While his paintings frequently contain figurative elements, the  abstract motifs of his compositions simultaneously retain the suggestion of recognizable forms. His work thus oscillates between legibility and abstraction, resulting in a tension that confuses our interpretation of the picture plane and the arrangement of forms.
