Zhang Wei

Zhang Wei, born in 1952, is a Chinese painter and an important figure in the development of abstract art in the postmodern China. Widely considered one of the founding members of the self-organized group of young painters known as the No Name Group, he continues to create abstract art. He prefers non-descriptive title for his work, cancelling the implied meaning (hinted by title) of an abstract work. Instead, the viewer is left to create its “meaning” as part of the viewing process. His work is not constrained by any particular movement of art, but stands independently with a distinct emphasis on Eastern aesthetics and spirituality.
