Matthew Schreiber

Matthew Schreiber (b. 1967, Cleveland, OH) has an undergraduate degree in Fine Art Painting from the University of Florida, where he also began his study of holography and physics. He went to complete his MFA in Art and Technology and Experimental Film from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a specialization in Holography from the Royal College of Art, London.

Though largely defined by his innovations in laser light sculptures and holography, Schreiber's practice involves many mediums, including drawing, performance, sculpture, and light. Schreiber has experimented with the intersection of art and science since childhood, a pursuit that has been central to his career spanning over three decades, during which he has integrated the principles of holography into his artistic practice. Schreiber maintains an optical and holography laboratory in Brooklyn, NY, which allows him to continue in his artistic explorations of the interplay of light and darkness. Schreiber’s works focus on themes of novelty, the occult, and spectacle by using tools of physics, technology, and the manipulation of perception.

For his first solo exhibition with Almine Rech, Schreiber will present a site-scaled laser sculpture in the Tribeca gallery, among other works. Other major upcoming projects include an exhibition of Schreiber's holographic work at the Getty Center this fall. Part of Pacific Standard Time: Art & Science Collide, "Sculpting with Light: Contemporary Artists and Holography," focuses on Schreiber's over 35 years of work in the field, including his pioneering collaborations with Louise Bourgeois, Ed Ruscha, and Deana Lawson, as well as his independent work. The exhibition will be on view August 20 - November 24, 2024.

Schreiberʼs work has been the subject of solo exhibitions including Orders of Light, The Boca Raton Museum of Art; Crossbow at the Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University; Side Show at Johannes Vogt Gallery, NYC; Guilloche at Fireplace Project in East Hampton, NY; and Swiss Hall Basel, Switzerland. Group exhibitions include Dark Mofo, MONA, Hobart Tasmania; The Jeweled Net: Views on Contemporary Holography at the MIT Museum in Cambridge, MA; Crystalline Lattice, curated by Yongwoo Lee in Gwangju, South Korea; Miami Noir at Invisible Exports in New York, NY; Shadows, Disappearances, and Illusions at the Perez Art Museum Miami; and Group Show at Almine Rech in Paris, France.
