Robert Irwin

California-born Robert Irwin is one of the most influential artists working with light, volume and scale, who acquired great recognition as he sought to change the relationship between viewer and artwork. He began his career as an Abstract Expressionist until he reached his own aesthetic research focused on perceptual phenomena. After working through several series of dot paintings as well as glass discs in the 1950s and 1960s, he became a pioneer of the California Light and Space movement. Irwin’s practice also incorporates landscape design and architecture, resulting in site-specific projects spanning recent decades.
